CLEAR SPRING WINS 2006 WASHINGTON COUNTY ENVIROTHON

The 2006 Washington County Envirothon was held on March 31 at the Fairview Outdoor Education Center. 10 teams from Boonsboro, Clear Spring and North Hagerstown as well as representatives from the Log Cabin Learning Program for home school students were on hand for the competition. Students were tested with hands on activities in soil science, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and preserving cultural resources.

Banners for the top score in each area of study were presented along with a framed wildlife print for school display for the top 3 scores overall.

The Clear Spring Trail Blazers placed first in the competition and also took top honors in Aquatics, Soils, Wildlife and Water Stewardship. The team will travel to the Maryland State Envirothon at the Schmidt center in Prince Georges County on June 20 through 22.

Team members Rebecca Funk, Sondra Lavigne, Derek Hanes, Hannah Smith and Katrina Hendershot all spent many hours preparing for the event and are looking forward to representing Washington County at the State level of competition. Clear Spring Envirothon coaches Sue Lowery and Terrie Shank are very proud of their team’s performance at this year’s event.

The Log Cabin Learning program for Home School Students fielded 3 teams Coached by Lynda Bell. The Shrubbers took second place over all as well as first place in Forestry. Team members were Nell Barber, Beth Orr, Ben Bell, Malia Dyson and Micheal Adams.

The Wilderness Wanderers, also from Clear Spring, placed third at the event. Team members were Steve Devilbiss, Adam Reid, Derrick Munday, D.J. Shirley and Amy Ridenour.

The Washington County Envirothon is an educational outreach program of the Washington County Soil Conservation District in cooperation with the Washington County Public Schools. Staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation and Maryland Department of Agriculture provide resource professionals for training and testing of participants. Financial support comes from The Washington County Soil Conservation District, Clean Earth of Maryland, Frederick Seibert and Associates, Tuscarora Hardwoods, Paul Crampton Contractors, Civil Planning and Design and James Reed Excavating.
